Family to be honored at International Symposium on Malignant Mesothelioma

A Pennsylvania family will be honored at this year's International Symposium on Malignant Mesothelioma by the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation on June 11, 2010 for their efforts in raising money for mesothelioma treatment research. The family lost a loved one to the asbestos cancer mesothelioma and created the John Sterling Memorial Grant in his memory.

The grant was awarded to a researcher at the University of Vermont and State Agricultural College. The researcher is examining ways to improve the effectiveness of Thiostrepton, an antitumor antibiotic that weakens a protein that causes growth of mesothelioma cancer cells. At the present time, there is no cure for malignant mesothelioma. However, there are a number of mesothelioma treatment techniques that can improve the quality of life for people suffering from mesothelioma. Some of these techniques include radiation, chemotherapy, surgery and photodynamic therapy.

Mesothelioma is almost always caused by exposure to asbestos. Frequently, asbestos exposure takes place at work and can be traced to asbestos-containing products such as brakes, roofing shingles and tiles. People who work with asbestos products are likely to become exposed to asbestos and develop asbestos cancers such as mesothelioma. Workers at risk of developing mesothelioma include mechanics, sheet metal workers, construction workers and plumbers.

When mesothelioma affects the lining of the abdomen, it is known as peritoneal mesothelioma. When mesothelioma affects the lining of the lungs, it is known as pleural mesothelioma or lung mesothelioma.
Common mesothelioma symptoms include coughing blood, difficulty breathing, abdominal swelling, fever and unexplained weight loss.

There are four stages of mesothelioma. The stages indicate the degree to which mesothelioma cancer has spread within the body and treatment options that are likely to be most effective. Mesothelioma treatment techniques are generally more successful when mesothelioma is diagnosed at its earlier stages.

People diagnosed with mesothelioma should contact a mesothelioma attorney because they may be entitled to substantial financial compensation from companies in the asbestos industry that failed to warn of the dangers of asbestos. Mesothelioma attorneys generally do not charge hourly fees. Instead, they only charge legal fees after winning a settlement or a verdict. The legal fee is typically a fraction of the settlement or verdict won on behalf of the mesothelioma patient.
